The honest version
Halifax parkrun is not one for the faint-hearted. Around 95 metres of elevation, a mix of tarmac and rocky trail, and 3.5 laps of an undulating loop that includes a proper hill on every circuit. It is a genuine challenge and a rewarding one, but if you are chasing a time, this is not the place.
The park itself is Shroggs Park, a tree-lined green space in the Lee Mount area of Halifax. It has a pleasant feel and a welcoming regular crowd. Just know what you are getting into before you lace up.
The route
The run starts at the monument in the middle of the park, then heads to the nearby start line. From there it is 3.5 laps of an undulating loop with an out-and-back section on each of the first three laps.
-
StartMonument, Shroggs Park
Meet at the monument in the centre of the park, then move to the nearby start line. Arrive a few minutes early to get your bearings.
-
Each lapUndulating loop around the park
Each lap follows the main path around the park. The terrain is a mix of tarmac and rocky, gravelly trail. The surface changes partway through the main loop on the descent. The route rolls throughout with no flat stretches to recover on.
-
Out and backDown the hill, then back up
After the main loop on laps one, two and three, there is an out-and-back section. You run down a hill, then turn and come back up. By this point your legs will know about the elevation. The return climb is a proper effort each time.
-
FinishBack at the start area after 3.5 laps
The final half-lap brings you back to the finish area. Keep track of your laps throughout as the course can feel repetitive.

Shoe recommendation by conditions
A road-to-trail shoe is ideal. Most of the course is tarmac but the main loop includes a section of rocky, gravelly trail on the descent. A shoe with some grip gives you confidence on both surfaces. Pure road shoes are manageable in dry conditions but take it steady on the gravel section.
Road-to-trail or trail shoes strongly recommended. The trail section of the main loop becomes significantly more treacherous in wet weather. Do not run it at full pace on pure road shoes when it is damp.
Getting there and parking
Shroggs Park is on Lee Mount Road, Halifax, HX3 5BX. There is free on-street parking on the roads around the perimeter of the park. It is a residential area so park considerately and leave driveways clear.
The park is 1.5 miles from Halifax town centre and 2 miles from Halifax train station, which is served by regular services from Leeds and Bradford.
Toilets
There are no public toilets in Shroggs Park. Plan ahead before you leave home.
After the run
There is a children's playground in the park. For a post-run coffee or food, Halifax town centre is 1.5 miles away and has a good range of independent cafes.
Is it good for a PB?
No. Halifax is a hilly, technically varied course and not one where you will find a new personal best. The elevation, the trail section on the main loop, and the rolling nature of each lap all work against a fast time. Come here for the challenge and the atmosphere, not the clock.
